Halloween Candy Alternatives

October 27, 2015

It’s that time again – when parents dread the sugar rush that is the month of October leading up to Halloween and then the weeks afterwards as the bags of candy get smaller and smaller – with kids begging for daily doses of chocolate. At Berkshire Natural, we’re all about eating healthy, but we know that it’s ok to indulge once in a while. Especially if those sweet treats have a bit of nutritional value to them and not just sugar sugar sugar. Even our own kids love a good candy bar every once in a while. For today’s blog post, we’re offering up our picks for Halloween candy alternatives. Even if your kid is bound to get a boatload of candy, it doesn’t mean you necessarily need to contribute to the pot. Here are a few of our favorite alternatives to traditional Halloween Candy:

“Good” Treats: For this category, we’ve got some ideas for treats to give away that are still considered “yummy treats” for kids, but not necessarily bad for them. Think healthy snacks and treats that kids still love and get excited about and have a bit of nutritional value to them and aren’t 100% pure sugar. For this list below, you can find most of these items in small packs and most likely in Halloween-themed packs that kids will love to get something different when they knock on your door. Here are a few of our favorites:

Non-Candy Goody Bag Items: As another idea for Halloween treats, think non-food altogether. In fact, this is a trend catching on with the Teal Pumpkin Project, which raises awareness over food allergies and promotes the idea of allergy-free treats for all kids. There are some great ideas to give away on Halloween that are not edible and provide countless hours of fun for kids. They’ll be happy to have some cool swag to play with in between chowing down on their candy. Here are our favorite non-food items to giveaway:

  • Art Supplies: Stickers, Crayons, stencils
  • Temporary Tattoos
  • Playdough
  • Slinkies
  • Spider Rings
  • Vampire Fangs
  • Glow Sticks and Necklaces

Whatever you decide to hand out at your door on Halloween, just be mindful that there are candy alternatives and healthy, fun options for anyone in your family. And, don’t worry, we won’t judge if you grab a few pieces of candy from your kids bags –Happy Halloween!
